The ABC of ELT

New Years Resolutions for ELT

[blows the dust off the keyboard, cracks knuckles, starts typing]

It’s a new year (well,Gregorian calendar new year, Chinese and Julian calendars have different dates but that’s by the by) and that means it’s a great opportunity for us to take stock of our lives, activities, work, and teaching. I’ve been thinking a lot about the bigger picture of my work, where I want to head in the future and how I’m going to improve my teaching in the coming year.

Of course, I’m going to use “SMART” goals  because they are a great framework for not only focusing on the desired end result but also the means to achieve them and setting goals which are more likely to be achieved.

As such here are my new years resolutions (for teaching)

  1. Write a (roughly) 500 word post once a week on the topic of ELT
  2. Attend one ELT conference this year [probably summer, as I’m free then]
  3. Attend an ELT online workshop once every couple of months [there are some great free workshops out there]
  4. Read an ELT related book every couple of months [length may vary]
  5. Spend 5 minutes at the end of the day journaling some of my reflections from the days teaching.

As you may have noticed, many of these ideas aren’t that tough nor that regular, I could probably increase them to gain more return (i.e. a 15 minute reflection or a book every week) but I deliberately want to do less than I think I will do so that I can increase if I want to but not feel guilty for not meeting my goal.

I have a couple of other goals that I’m not going to share at the moment (sometimes sharing a goal can prevent you from succeeding), but at least some of these goals will be more noticeable to you the reader of this site.

What about you?

Do you have any new year goals or resolutions to change your teaching?
